The prude is the libertine without the courage to face his naked soul.

Puritanism: the haunting fear that someone, somewhere, may be happy.
H. L. MENCKEN

There is nothing wrong with people having different opinions — the world would be a dull stagnant place without them. It is also natural and healthy that people with different opinions try to bring others to see their point of view. But what can never be forgiven is any attempt by people to force their opinions on others by legislative coercion. This, no matter what its motivation, is an act of fascism.

There is no difference in method between the Festival of Light, and Adolf Hitler and Stalin. All seek, or sought, to use the power of the State to determine what people think, see, hear or read. The only differences are squabbles over degree and content. But the method is the same.

We do not doubt the sincerity, or the good intentions, of the Festival of Light’s leaders or members. We might even accept some of their arguments. But we totally oppose their attempt to force the community to accept them.

No one is forced to go to pornographic movies, read pornographic literature, take drugs or indulge in sexual permissiveness. If, somehow, they are forced, then there is a legitimate case for government interference because the use of such force is a real crime. But, by and large, people indulge in non-Festival of Light fun and games of their own free will (see Crime).

If Fred Nile, Freida Brown, Mary Whitehouse, et al, don’t like pornography, for example, then they should simply stay away from it.
